The problem with lockdowns, besides the social isolation, is that humans derive meaning from work, and so without work they cannot be happy. Living, but not happy.

You’ll remember that even before Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden God gave them work to do. Later work became toil and pregnancy became painful, but Genesis tells us that work has forever been part of paradise.

One story of modernity is that we’d rather be safe than happy, numb drunk and not working, living but not really alive. On perpetual vacation.
