Ripped jeans used to mean something.

At first, it meant you were either homeless or couldn’t afford new jeans. Then, it meant you wanted to be different, an outsider. But today, everyone is wearing ripped jeans, and they don’t mean anything more than, “I’m trying to fit in.”

The other day I saw a student wearing blue jeans and I actually thought to myself, “She’s edgy.”

Jeans are only a metaphor for the point I’m trying to make, which is that it’s the edge cases that change the world. Airbnb was an edge case. Facebook was an edge case. Apple and Google were edge cases.

If you feel like you’re fitting in you’re probably doing it all wrong.
