A common narrative in a girl’s mind when she lifts weights for the first time is, “I’m scared I’ll get bulky. I don’t want my boobs to get smaller.”
The novice coach would explain concepts like time under tension, and the difference between hypertrophy and hyperplasia.
The intermediate coach would explain that he doesn’t write programs in a way that makes female athletes bulky. He keeps the reps low enough to avoid that.
The advanced coach merely listens. He empathizes. He understands that the concern has nothing to do with bulk and everything to do with fear and confidence. He would know that the only path forward is further into the fear.
Some female athletes will avoid the fear, but some will go forward and realize they’re still okay.
Then the narrative changes, which was the whole point.
