My reaction to student-athletes who quit is usually a mixture of surprise, sadness, and gladness.
Surprise because it isn’t expected.
Sadness because that person won’t be here anymore.
And gladness because we’re one step closer to creating a group of people who care enough to go on a difficult journey together.
Quitting because it’s hard or frightening is not okay, but it’s good to quit because the journey isn’t for you. Just be very clear on the difference, then find your own difficult, scary journey to go on.
