Two weeks ago I was approached by a student-athlete who was curious what ab exercises she could do to get rid of her beer gut. If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time you can already guess how this conversation went:
“Me: There’s really no exercise proven to reduce abdominal fat. It has more to do with nutrition.
Her: What do you mean?
Me: Well, beer has a lot of calories in it. Just three beers might add up to an extra 500 calories. Do that once or twice a week without changing anything else, and if you’re predisposed to store fat on your abdomen you end up with a beer gut.
Her: But aren’t there any exercises that can help?
Her: But I don’t want to stop drinking beer.
(end of conversation).”
Exercises are safe and easy. Drinking less alcohol is scary and hard.
[PS — In this case the student-athlete only perceived herself as having a beer gut. It wouldn’t occur to an observer that there was anything wrong with her body.]
