Pinned tweets and going viral

There’s a tendency to pin tweets that have gone viral. It doesn’t matter what the tweet says, and it doesn’t matter if it was helpful, hurtful, informative, or completely irrelevant. The immediacy of the moment compels us to pin what’s most popular, but consider this:

In 1994 the movie Shawshank Redemption premiered in movie theaters. As the writer Ryan Holiday explains, “As a movie, it underwhelmed at the box office–never playing on more than a thousand screens and barely clawing back its production budget in gross ticket sales.”

Today, Shawshank Redemption is considered one of the best movies of all time, still holding the #1 ranking on IMDb’s Top 250 list.

The danger is in spending your life trying to write tweets that go viral. It might be better to spend your life trying to write a perennial seller.
