I cancelled my training sessions today so I can go to Professional Development Day, but last night I got an e-mail from a senior student-athlete asking me what time the athlete gym is open today. Even on his day off he wants to make sure he gets his workout in.
That’s a professional.
This same student-athlete wants to go to a graduate school with strict entry requirements. He didn’t do well on the entry exam the first time so he hired a tutor before taking the exam again.
That’s a professional.
Another student-athlete I know wants to go to medical school but failed organic chemistry, the class required for entrance into medical school. You don’t need to know organic chemistry to be a great doctor, but schools know that if a student can’t get through organic chemistry she won’t be able to get through medical school.
Instead of retaking organic chemistry she gave up her ambition to be a doctor.
That’s an amateur.
She also won’t step within 100 yards of the athlete gym today; she’ll be sleeping in instead.
That’s an amateur.
[The athlete gym is, in fact, closed today. I will be at Professional Development Day, speaking at 2:10 on “The Basics of Exercise” in Williams Center S204D. The upstairs gym is open all day.]
