What an athlete means when she says “I can’t”

She might mean she literally can’t. “I can’t be the President of the United States,” is almost universally true.

Much more often she means, “I might be able to, but I’m too scared to try without you right now.”

A sign of maturity is when she feels afraid, and interprets that fear as the very reason to try, all by herself.
