Getting fired every year

Let’s imagine for a moment.

Imagine there was no tenure. Imagine there was no job security whatsoever. Imagine that each year you had to be rehired for your job. Imagine that each year a committee gets to decide whether to keep you or to open a search to hire someone better.

Now, imagine the person making that decision isn’t your boss, nor someone higher up the chain of command. Imagine the committee is made up of the people you seek to serve: an all-student committee for a professor, an all-athlete committee for a coach, etc. How would that change your behavior?

I’m not advocating for such a system — it sounds awfully stressful. But nonetheless, it’s an interesting thought experiment.
